DONALD TRAVER has been at the forefront of NYC contemporary art since his first solo exhibition at Massimo Audiello Gallery in 1984.  He played an important role in creating the vibrant ‘80s East Village art scene, and his large-scale surrealist paintings won grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the NY Foundation for the Arts in Painting. Donald served as the Artistic Director of the Limelight, while the galleries and clubs of the East Village were the center of artistic activity. Donald is a leading instructor, educator and curator. His popular drawing and painting classes at NYU have been consistently popular for decades.  Donald paints at his Gowanus studio and in his country house in rural Pennsylvania.  Much of his work, whether figurative or abstract, reflects his immersion in the countryside. Donald completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at SUNY New Paltz.  He studied artistic anatomy with Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Students League and established long-lasting partnerships with Miriam Schapiro, a leader of the Pattern and Decoration art movement, and celebrated feminist artist Ida Applebroog. He now runs daily operations at Pace Editions and the ambiance of this esteemed printshop affect his art.
